Big Dave’s Big Gift Bike-A-Thon 2010

Saturday, April 24, 2010, 10am-Noon @ Easley Elementary School

Our first bike-a-thon is a fun and fit activity for kindergartners through fifth-graders, with all children reaching for their personal best distance.  Students set realistic lap goals based on age and development. Each student will receive a token of appreciation for participation in the bike-a-thon.

Our goal is to help the fundraising efforts of the David Turner Lymphoma Foundation, “Big Dave’s Big Gift,” as we raise money to help fund stem cell transplants for adolescents / young adults who demonstrate financial need. We hope that all Easley students will participate in the bike-a-thon to the best of their ability. We hope to make this bike-a-thon the best ever, so that the more contributions students raise, the more successful Big Dave’s Big Gift will be at achieving their goals. Thank you very much for your participation!

Rules

1.     Students may start collecting pledges as soon as they receive the pledge sheets. Each sponsor making a pledge should write his/her name, pledge per lap, and maximum pledge.

2.     Pledge sheets must be brought to bike-a-thon day, Saturday, April 24, 2010.

3.     On bike-a-thon day, K-2 students will be able to ride between 11am-Noon, and 3-5 grade students will be able to ride between 10-11am. Each lap is approximately 1/8 mile. A parent is to accompany the child to keep track of the number of laps the child rides.

4.     Upon completion of the bike-a-thon, a volunteer will record each student’s lap total on the child’s pledge sheet and return it. Students may then collect outstanding pledges. Please return pledge sheets and envelopes with the money collected to your teacher by Friday, April 30 or Friday, May 6.

5.     Students are required to wear helmets while participating in the bike-a-thon. Before completing their laps, students will need to go through a bike check station on site, where their bikes will be checked in several areas, including seat height, brakes and handle bars. Volunteers will assist in insuring that riders follow proper safety procedures throughout the ride.

The bike-a-thon will also feature some other bicycle related activities like Kids’ Bike Relay, Bicycle Obstacle Race, and Slow Bicycle Race. Healthy snacks and juices along with water will also be available. Tickets will be sold on site during the event for 75 cents each. Tickets can be exchanged for food and/or as admission to the other bicycle-related activities. All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the David Turner Lymphoma Foundation to help fund stem cell transplants for adolescents / young adults who demonstrate financial need.

Special thanks to the Durham Police Department!

The Durham Police Department will host a Bike Safety Program as part of the bike-a-thon activities.
They will explain bike safety and hand signals and will host a bike safety course.

Durham Bulls tickets will also be on sale at the bike-a-thon.
Thursday, May 27th, is Big Dave’s Big Gift Night at the Durham Bulls. We will have ticket vouchers on sale during the bike-a-thon. The vouchers are each good for one reserved seat for any Durham Bulls home game, Sunday through Thursday (vouchers cannot be used for Friday or Saturday games). Even though vouchers are good for any Durham Bulls game throughout the season, we hope you will join us and come out to support Big Dave’s Big Gift on Thursday, May 27th. Ticket vouchers will be sold for $9. Donations of any amount will also be accepted.

All proceeds from ticket sales and donations will benefit the David Turner Lymphoma Foundation as we help fund stem cell transplants for adolescents / young adults demonstrating financial need.

We look forward to all participants having a great time!
